Jennings said she hopes the audience can appreciate the drama when BHS has been more known for its comedies. “You've really got to joke around a lot to make it easier mentally to get through that.” “You've got to joke around a lot because you're trying to play a real person and show more real emotions,” Lager said. To tackle the seriousness and the heaviness of the play, the students and their director have learned to keep some levity in the theater while rehearsing.
But there's a lot of things I can relate to my life, too, so it makes it easier.” “There's just a lot of things I can relate to Grace Fryer. “I can actually do research on the person to know what they were like,” she said.
Senior Jenna Jennings, in her first lead role as Fryer, said she enjoys the realness of the character. It's very challenging acting wise because you just have to shut yourself off more than you normally would.” “You have to put up a front of someone that you are not like at all. Portraying a real person has been difficult for Lager as he typically puts some of himself into a character. “There were a lot of smaller things that you wouldn't really pick up on the first read - understanding what's happening in each scene and how that would affect the character of Arthur Roeder.” “I've done a decent amount of research on Arthur Roeder to find out what he was really like and looking through the script a lot,” Lager said. “We really took some time to make them make decisions about their characters so they could put that into their scenes.” “We really spent a lot of time grounding them in who their characters were, whether they're based off history or they're based off their own imagination,” she said. Prior to rehearsals, McNamara held a workshop to help the students discover their characters - some of whom are based on historical people and some of whom are not. “Even though it is so sad, there are beautiful moments.” “This year, I wanted to actually focus on creating the art, actually making something beautiful,” she said. McNamara wanted to challenge her students with this play. (Grace Fryer) is the only one he can actually remember.”
“So they play several different characters in his memory. “The reason that multiple people play multiple characters is because his memory is fuzzy,” McNamara said.
